Clinical questions to be addressed:

  • What are the causes of persistent pain in older populations?  What are practical considerations in diagnosing and evaluating the severity of persistent pain in older patients and its response to treatment?
  • What are the adverse effects of persistent pain on function, quality of life, and psychological health of older patients and significant other/care providers?
  • What pharmacologic and non-drug treatment modalities are available, known to be of high value, and recommended? What are their relative benefits and associated risks? What pharmacologic changes associated with aging and disease impact treatment recommendations?
