Clinical Triad: Sexually Transmitted Infections: Common Diseases and Common Misconceptions 

Clinical questions to be addressed:

Segment A.  Chlamydia and Gonorrhea: Update on Epidemiology and Enhancing Screening and Diagnosis, Along with New Treatment Recommendations in the Face of Antibiotic Resistance.

Learning Objectives:

  • 1. Identify who should be screened, how often, and with what test, for gonorrhea and chlamydia infection.
  • 2. Describe appropriate recommended treatment for gonorrhea including pharyngeal disease and the penicillin-allergic patient.

Segment B.  Remember the Treponeme: Syphilis rates have been rising, infection can manifest in any organ system, and the diagnosis can be missed if there is not clinical suspicion. New serologic tests can be confusing.

  • Learning Objectives:
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of early syphilis.
  • Describe appropriate serologic testing and interpretation in the various stages of syphilis, and to assess adequacy of treatment.
  • Identify when neurosyphilis should be considered and how the diagnosis can be made.

Segment C.  Human Papillomaviruses: Expanding Prevention through Vaccination and Managing Disease in the Office or at Home.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the latest vaccination strategies for HPV prevention.
  • Identify simple treatment options for patients with genital warts.
  •  Recognize mucosal infection and describe management strategies.
