Clinical Triad: SURVIVOR, the 2013 Season: Long-Term Effects in Cancer Patients Cured of Their Diseases

Clinical questions to be addressed:

Segment A. Second Malignancies in Cancer Survivors

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the impact of a prior malignancy and its successful treatment (underlying disease, surgery, radiation, and/or chemotherapy) on the incidence of second malignancies.
  • Understand when, if, and how screening for common malignancies should be altered for survivors of a prior malignancy.
  • Understand when and if additional surveillance efforts may be appropriate to include for other less common malignancies in these patients.

Segment B. Late Cardiac Complications in Cancer Survivors

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the impact of cancer therapy on the incidence and severity of common cardiovascular conditions including atherosclerotic heart disease and congestive heart failure.
  • Understand which additional cardiovascular complications may be seen more frequently in cancer survivors.
  • Understand when and if treatment of cardiovascular disease should be modified in cancer survivors.

Segment C. Reproductive Issues in Cancer Survivors

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand how fertility can best be preserved in cancer survivors.
  • Understand what additional risks exist after prior cancer therapy for mother and child during gestation and delivery.
  • Understand when and if prior cancer therapy increases the risk for genetic abnormalities in the offspring and how these risks vary over time after cancer therapy.
